The Mothering of God
Yahweh has created a new thing in the earth: a woman shall encompass a man.
We get far too tied up in the over-masculinization of God. It has been a diservice to us and to the greater Church. The fact that people would look at someone as a heretic for speaking of God in the feminine reveals a lack of intimacy and mothering happening in our relationship with Her. (See? How'd that make you feel?)
Jesus expressed the damage our over-masculinization of God does when he said, "How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing!" (Matthew 23:37) When we only see God as an awesome, manly dad who defends and instructs us, we subconsciously become averted from God nursing and tending to us like a loving mother.
If we're uncomfortable with even the thought of that, imagine what we're doing to our relationship with God. It reveals that we've been seduced into worshiping an image of God (kind of a no-no, as far as Scripture is concerned).
Being tied to images of God is not the same as being tied to God. Our images turn into constraints and restrictions and need to be shed if we're to truly love God and not just a religious idea of God.
This Mother's Day, I am grateful for my mom, Susan Pinkston, who helped make it easier for me to believe in and receive the Mothering of God.
