Can you believe who you are?

So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
    male and female he created them.

– Genesis 1:27

It is such a great benefit for us to begin our faith and theology with this passage of scripture, as well as recognize how it is also Its revelation.

Many of us get caught up in a faith that drags us to somewhere other than where we are and to someone other than who we are. That is such a terribly sad distraction from the Gospel (Good News). Don’t get me wrong, we do need transformation, maturation, and growth. Of course. But too often we act and believe ourselves to be nothing other than sin or evil-bent children of the dirt who are clamoring for a distant hope. The Reality could not be further from the truth.

We cannot truly get to know God without getting to know how we are like Him.

Christ brings us this message: We have to identify with the One Who identified with us. We have to identify with the One who gave us our identity. So, when feeling impatient, unloving, bitter, or pessimistic (hopeless), free to recognize the difference between emotion and identity. Christ is all and is in all. This includes you! This includes us! Seek deeper than emotions. Knock on the callous areas. Behind them lie a greater Reality.

Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.” (John 8:12)

Jesus said, “You are the Light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)

It is important to remember what God did before anything that Adam did. What God did is greater, more important, and more true. This is a truth about all of humanity, not only a select few.

CAUTION: If we only treat this like a nice theological thought and not our personal Reality, we will be like “someone who looks at their face in a mirror and, after looking at themselves, goes away and immediately forgets what they look like." It is a practice and conscious effort to discover our personal Reality.
