What is Spiritual Direction?
The experience of being listened to, truly listened to, is unfortunately very rare. Reading that statement may bring one or two moments to mind when you actually felt deeply heard. Or maybe you're unable to recount any experience like that at all. The challenge in being fully heard results in a difficulty to connect; connect with others, life's circumstances, our dreams, ourselves, or God.
Spiritual Direction is the art of "sacred listening," and has been a practice in Christianity for centuries, though lost over the last number of decades. It is called "Spiritual Direction," not because the "spiritual director" is giving direction like an actor would receive in a play, but because they help sort out a path and create space where personal spiritual direction is uncovered and discovered, by intentionally listening and asking specific questions.
